accentual vs syllabic metre
A: each line has the same number of stresses but varies in number of syllables
S: each line has the same number of syllables but varies in number of stresses
accentual-syllabic metre
each line has the same number of stressed and non-stresses syllables in a fixed order
rhythm
general phenomenon, variation of speed in which the poem is likely to be read
pauses
breaks to organize the verse
elision
unstressed syllables which are normally pronounced are now not
expansion
syllables which would be normally ignored are now pronounced; older common pronunciation
vowel length
change in the rhythm and speed
consonant clusters
support very fast or very slow rhythms
modulation
transition from one key to another
internal rhyme
occurs within a line in poetry - assonance, alliteration
end rhyme
occurs at the end of a line or other line within same stanza
sound patterns
used to link words which would not be otherwise connected - onomatopoeia, rhythm, alliteration, assonance
