Explicit Metaphor
: a metaphor in which the characteristic being compared between two objects is only implied and left up to the reader to imply the meaning from the context of the sentence.
Implicit Metaphor
: a rhetorical device that is a memorable, brief, interesting and surprising satirical statement.
Epigram
: rhetorical device in which two or more clauses are balanced against each other by the reversal of their structures in order to produce an artistic effect.
Chiasmus
: emphasizes the idea of contrast by parallel structures of the contrasted phrases or clauses, i.e. the structures of phrases and clauses are similar in order to draw the attention of the listeners or readers.
Antithesis
: is a phrase or figure of speech that could have two meanings or that could be understood in two different ways.
Double Entendre
: a word or phrase that is used to stand in for another word
Metonymy
: an extreme exaggeration used to make a point.
Hyperbole
: the deliberate repetition of the first part of the sentence in order to achieve an artistic effect
Anaphora
: is a rhyme scheme that uses tercets, or three-line stanzas, and a pattern of interlocking end rhymes, rhymes that occur at the ends of lines.
