What is the context for Remains?
Simon Armitage is known for his colloquial style and dark humour. In 2007 he interviewed veteran soldiers from different wars, including the Gulf war, which this poem is likely based on due to the sand reference.
What is the context for Poppies?
Jane Weir moved to Ireland during the troubles, and therefore experienced conflict first-hand. She attempted to convey a mother’s perspective of conflict, inspired by the Afghanistan war and Wilfred Owen’s mother.

Carol Anne Duffy is the first female poet laureate. This poem describes a war photographer, working while trying to make sense of his experiences.
What is the context for London?
William Blake was a romantic poet, meaning he focused on emotion. He disliked the monarchy and was very inspired by the French revolution, questioned church teachings and was a believer in social and racial equality. At the time of writing, England was rapidly industrialising.
