anaphora
the repetition of words or phrases in a group of sentences, clauses, or poetic lines at the beginning of lines
caesura
a metrical pause or break in a verse where one phrase ends and another phrase begins. ie the tide rises, the tide falls
conceit
A metaphor that is so complex it dominates the entire poem
diction
ie: lullaby, soft and soothing

English/Shakespearian sonnet

enjambment
The running-over of a sentence or phrase from one poetic line to the next
euphemism
a word or phrase used to obliquely describe something unpleasant, impolite, or taboo. ie: she passed away last year
imagery
any part of a poem or other literary work that appeals to the senses
inversion
changing the usual word order of speech. ie:green were my jealous eyes
Italian/ petrarchan sonnet
divides the 14 lines into two sections: an eight-line stanza (octave) rhyming ABBAABBA, and a six-line stanza (sestet) rhyming CDCDCD or CDECDE.
kenning
Compound metaphore ie: book worm
octave
a verse form consisting of eight lines of iambic pentameter ABBA ABBA
oxymoron
a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction (e.g. faith unfaithful kept him falsely true )
pun
a joke exploiting the different possible meanings of a word.
