Alliteration
the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of closely connected words. ie: sweet bird sang
Allusion
an implied or indirect reference to a person, event, or thing or to a part of another text.
Apostrophe
A direct adress. ie: oh my dagger, oh captain my captain
assonance
in poetry, the repetition of the sound of a vowel or diphthong in nonrhyming stressed syllables near enough to each other for the echo to be discernible. ie: His tender heir might bear his memory
cacophony
a jarring sound. ie: sh99T, b66tch
consonance
a figure of speech in which the same consonant sound repeats within a group of words. ie: same- home
euphony
Repeated longer volumes soft to the ears ie: shhhh
Feminine rhyme
More complex rhyme, multi syllable. ie: mother-other, ocean- motion
hyperbole
exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally
internal rhyme
a rhyme involving a word in the middle of a line and another at the end of the line or in the middle of the next. ie: I drove myself to the lake / and dove into the water
masculine rhyme
simple rhyme. ie: cat-rat
metaphor
is a figure of speech that directly refers to one thing by mentioning another. ie: She’s got a heart of gold
metonymy
metaphor of subsitution. ie: pen is mighter than the sword, lend me your ears -attention
onomatopoeia
words thats only meaning is a sound ie: boom
paradox
A paradox is a logically self-contradictory statement or statement contrary to one’s expectation. ie: it was the beginning of the end
personification
the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something nonhuman, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form
