graphic elements
There are several graphic elements that poets choose to use when they present their poem. This is the visual presentation of their poem on the page.
When analyzing graphic elements, ask yourself:
1. Why did the author choose to display their poem this way?
2. How does this choice support the meaning or purpose of the poem?
Graphic element: Line break
Why did the line break where it did? What is the significance? (the author did that ON PURPOSE!)
Graphic element:
Line length
What is the meaning of repeated very short lines vs long, running lines?
How does the line length fit the meaning of the poem?
Graphic element:
Font Style
Is the font bold? cursive? creepy? creative? Why did the author choose that font?
Does the font style change anywhere in the poem? What is the significance?
What is the change supposed to reveal?
Graphic element:
Font Size
Is the font really large? Really small?
Does the font size change anywhere in the poem? What is the significance?
What is the change supposed to reveal?
Graphic element:
Text Formatting
Where is the text on the page?
All squished to one side? Spread out? In a shape?
Why did the author choose to format the text this way?
