what is poetry
a rhythmic, compressed language that uses figures of speech and imagery to appeal to emotion and imagination
what is a narrative
a story told in verse form
what is a ballad
a type of poem that is meant to be sung and is both lyric and narrative in nature
what is an alliteration
the repetition of the initial consonant sound in two or more words in the same line of verse
what is consonance
the repetition of consonant sounds that are NOT at the beginnings of words in a line of verse
what is assonance
the similarity or repetition of vowel sounds in two or more words with different consonant sounds
what is onomatopoeia
the use of words that imitate the sounds they define
what is repetition
repeating a word or phrase within a poem
what is refrain
the repetition of one or more phrases or lines at definite intervals in a poem, usually at the end of a stanza
what is a simile
two dissimilar things are compared using words such as “like”, “as”, or “than”
what is a metaphor
two dissimilar things are compared WITHOUT using words such as “like”, “as”, or “than”
What is a direct metaphor
directly compares two things with a verb such as “is”
what is an implied metaphor
suggests a comparison without using “is”
what is an extended metaphor
a metaphor that is developed over several lines of writing
what is personification
giving human or animate qualities to nonhuman or inanimate things
what is apostrophe
words that are spoken to a person who is absent or imaginary, or to an object or abstract idea
what is literary allusion
a reference to a person, place, or thing from previous literature
what is a hyperbole
exaggeration for the sake of effect, for emphasis, not to be taken literally
what is a litotes
understatement for the sake of effect
