Assonance
The same vowel sound is repeated but the constants are different
eg- sharp, dark
Enjambment
sentence continues beyond the end of a line or verse
used to maintain a sense of continuation from one stanza to another
Hyperbole
exaggerating something for literary purposes which is not meant to be taken literally
eg- we gorged on a banquet of beans on toast
Imagery
similes, metaphors and personification- they all compare something ‘real’ with something ‘imagined’
Irony
the humorous or sarcastic use of words or ideas implying the opposite of what they meant
Monologue
shows characters importance or state of mind- thinking out loud
oxymoron
where 2 word normally not associated with each other are brought together
eg- bitter sweet
Onomatopoeia
a word that sounds like a noise it is describing
Pathos
language that evokes feelings of pity or sorrow
-a sense of pathos
Ambiguity
a word or phrase that could mean more than 1 thing
gets the reader thinking about the different possibilities
Atmosphere
The feeling or mood of the poem
Alliteration
First letter of a word is repeated in the words that follow
eg cold, crisp, clean
Aural imagery
images created through sound, by the uses of techniques such as alliteration
Narration, first person
using ‘I’ - telling of a story trough the voice of the poet
Personification
a metaphor attributing human feelings to an object
