Chapter one ‘The Sound of the Shell’ summary
Ralph and Piggy find the conch. Ralph blows the conch to call an assembly and is elected as chief
Jack, Simon and Ralph explore the island and confirm it is an island
Find a trapped pig, which Jack can not bring himself to kill
Chapter 2 ‘Fire on the Mountain’ summary
Ralph calls another assembly
One of the littluns mentions a ‘beastie’. They debate its existence and conclude it was just a nightmare
Ralph decides they need to make sire on the mountain as a signal so they can be rescued
Fire rages out of control- one of the littluns is killed
Jack and Ralph begin to argue- negatives of island become more apparent
Chapter 3 ‘Huts on the beach’ summary
Jack becomes obsessed with hunting pigs, though is yet to catch one
Simon and Ralph are the only ones building huts, the rest of the boys play
Ralph becomes frustrated and argues with Jack again- they have different priorities (Ralph- shelters, Jack-hunting)
Simon wanders off to an isolated location and appreciates the natural beauty of nature around him
Chapter 4 ‘Painted Faces and Long Hair’ summary
Roger and Maurice bully the littluns on the beach, however they are still held back by the rules they learnt in civilisation
Jack paints his face for hunting and leads the boys on a hunting expedition. They let the fire go out
Ship passes whilst they are hunting
Jack and the hunters return with a pig. Jack and Ralph argue
Chapter 5 ‘Beast from water’ summary
Ralph becomes weary of responsibility. He calls a meeting and reestablishes the rules regarding the fire
The subject of the beast is brought up and one boy claims the beast comes from the sea
Simon suggests that the beast is only them. The other boys make fun of him
Jack storms away with his hunters
Chapter 6 ‘Beast from the air’
A plane is shot down and a dead parachutist lands on the island
Samneric see it and mistake it for the beast
They go and tell the other boys. Boys go and hunt the beast, going to the only unexplored part- Castle Rock
Ralph notices that the fire has gone out, none of the others seem to care
Chapter 7 ‘Shadows and Tall Trees’ chapter summary
Ralph realises how high the odds against rescue are but Simon tells him that he will get back to where he came from
Ralph gets his first taste of hunting and enjoyed it
The boys act out a pig hunt
Jack, Roger and Ralph go to the mountain in search for the beast. They see the dead parachutist who they mistake for the beast
Chapter 8 ‘Gift for the Darkness’ summary
Jack calls a meeting and says that Ralph should no longer be chief. No one else agrees
Jack leaves the tribe
Piggy suggests that they build the fire on the beach
Simon goes to his hiding spot
Some of the boys join Jack’s new tribe and hunt a pig, offering the head to the beast as a sacrifice
Simon imagines the pig’s head is talking to him
Chapter 9 ‘The View to a death’ summary
Simon wakes up and discovers that the beast is just the parachuter he heads to the beach to tell the others
All the boys go to Jack’s feast
Jack and his hunters begin their chant. Simon appears from the forest and they kill him
Chapter 10 ‘The Shell and the Glasses’ summary
Ralph, Piggy and Samneric are the only ones left in the original tribe
They express there horror over Simon’s death and try to cover up the fact that they took part
Jack’s Tribe attacks Ralph’s and steal Piggy’s glasses
Chapter 11 ‘Castle Rock summary’
Ralphs tribe go to Castle Rock with the conch
Ralph demands Piggy’s glasses back
Jack’s savages tie up Samneric
Roger wedges a giant rock loses and rolls it onto Piggy, which kills Piggy and smashes the conch
Jack and the others throw spears at Ralph who runs away
Chapter 12 ‘Cry of the Hunters’ summary
Ralph returns to Castle Rock at night to talk to Samneric. They warn him about the hunt for him tomorrow and that Roger has sharpened a stick at both ends
Ralph hides in a thicket
The twins give away Ralphs location and Jack tries to smoke him out
Ralph charges out and runs for his life.
The hunters chase Ralph down to the beach where he finds a naval officer who saw the smoke
