What is a ballard?
A narrative poem often made up of quadtrains, originating in the mediaeval period

Plot driven poem which shows the reader the events of the poem rather than telling them
What is Blank Verse?
Unrhymed metered lines, primarily written using Iambic pentameter
What is the effect of blank verse?
Blank verse mirrors the general speech patterns of conventional English, so they are well understood by the reader
What is a couplet?
A rhyming couplet - two consecuitive rhyming lines
What is the effect of a couplet?
When read aloud, couplets have a clear repetitive rhythm to them which can be used to emphasise a writers point
What is a dramatic monologue?
a poem in which the speaker addresses a listener. This may be the reader, though often a separate unnamed and unmentioned character
What is the effect of a dramatic monologue?
Allow the writer to create a layered speaker with emotional depth created by the insight we get from hearing their inner most thoughts. This increases the readers emotional investment and engagement
What is an end stopped line?
A line at the ending with a full stop
What is the effect of an end-stopped line?
End stopped lines slow down the pace of a poem by creating a break, which gives a more rhythmic feel to a poem
What is epic?
An extremely long often book length poem in verse form, often tells a story of a heroic event journey person
What is the effect of epic?
relays heroic tales and intends to inspire the reader from the success of the hero overcoming obstacles
What is free verse?
unrhyming non-metrical lines, that closely mimics spoken english
What is the effect of free verse?
Freeverse gives a writer more freedom in their addiction, allowing them to convey their message without structural restrictions and allows the reader to have a clearer understanding
What is iambic pentameter?
rhyme structure and unstressed syllable followed by stressed syllable, five times in the line
