Rhythm
Internal “feel” of beat and metre perceived when poetry is read aloud
Paradox
Seeming contradiction that surprises by its pithiness/shortness
Pun
Is a play on words, where one word/phrase has more than one meaning
Simile
A comparison using “as” or “like”
Oxymoron
A seeming contradiction in two words put together
Tone/mood
Feelings or meanings conveyed in the poem
Metaphor
A comparison not using as or like when one thing is said to be another
Personification
Attribution of human behaviours to impersonal agencies
Rhyme
Repetition of same sound
Alliteration
The deliberate repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning
Apostrophe
Speaking directly to a real or imagined listener or inanimate object, addressing that person or thing by name
Repetition
Repetition of key word or idea for effect
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for dramatic effect
Onomatopoeia
Sound echoing sense, use of words resembling the sounds they mean
Imagery
The way the author uses descriptive words to create an image for the reader
Usually the words used appeal to one or more of our 5 senses
It uses mental pictures to understand the hidden idea within the text
Each reader will likely have a different image
