Position that the narrator takes
1st person: the narrator is speaking form his own perspective (I, me, mine)
2nd person: referring to the reader (you, yours)
3rd person limited: the narrator is telling the story through the thoughts of one person/character (he, she)
3rd person omniscient: the narrator can see the inner thoughts and feelings of multiple characters
Plot
A series of events that take place in the story
Introduction: where the story starts
Trigger: event that starts the action
Rising actions: events that lead up to the climax
Climax: most exciting, important, and intense part of the story
Falling actions: after climax
Conclusion: ties up all lose ends
Character
Person in a story
They can be FLAT and STATIC or ROUND and DEVELOPING
Direct characterization
The narrator specifically says something to let us know about the character
Indirect characterization
Subtle comments from other or actions that allow us to infer things or assume things about the characters
Protagonist
Main character
Antagonist
Hostile to the protagonist
Theme
Statement the story makes about some aspect of life that reflects the main idea/message of the story
