What is assonance?
Assonance is when nearby words repeat the same vowel sound.
What is consonance?
Consonance is harmonious sounding caused by the repetition of consonant sounds.
What is enjambment?
Enjambment is the continuation from one line of verse into the next line.
What is foreshadowing?
An indication or hint of a future event/meaning.
What is hyperbole?
An extravagant exaggeration.
What is an onomatopoeia?
Using words that imitate the sound they actually do, e.g. bang, crash.
What is a satire?
Satire is the use of humour, irony or exaggeration to expose or criticize people’s stupidity or vices.
What is an allusion?
Allusion is an indirect reference to something, in order to make a comparison in the readers’ minds.
What is personification?
The representation of human charcteristics to something non-human, vice versa.
What is an oxymoron?
When two words used together have opposite meanings, e.g. pretty ugly, awfully lucky, etc.
What is paradox?
A statement that contradicts itself.
What is cacophony?
Harsh sounds in order to make a discordant sound. “dark knuckles wrapping across my back”
Name a basic type of rhythm.
Dactyl - a long syllable followed by 2 short syllables, unbalanced - it makes the person feel like they’re trembling.
What is an allegory?
Something symbollic, represents a wider interpretation.
What is ambiguity?
A word or idea that has different meanings.
