Poems- Eat Me Flashcards
Overall msg behind it
Agbabi wrote this contemporary poem to highlight the emotional complexity and slow violence of domestic abuse as well as the dehumanising power of sexist objectification
Highlights the power dynamic and unhealthy toxic relationship between a man and a woman trying to fulfill his needs.
The structure of eat me
Dramatic monologue. - creates a sense of real life, as if the story is being told by first hand account, perhaps to emphasise to the reader how common these violent relationships are in society. Furthermore cerastes a sense of tension as its a first person story and someone lived through it furthermore heightening the tension.
Ten tersests- the strict tercets represent the rigid and entrapment of the woman in the relationionship- both in the relationship and the vicious cycle of the weight gain. The regimented rhyme scheme furthermore shows how there’s a constant monotone pattern to the daily life and how the woman can’t escape the power of the man, mirroring societal relationships.
The end stops - perhaps they are metaphorical of the lack of freedom of th woman and entrapment by the man or perhaps the idea of not being able to escape the viscous cycle of sexism and objectification.
