What is a narrative?
Tells a story-emphasis a plot
What is an elegy?
A dignified, formal poem remembering a person who has died.
What is a sonnet?
A 14 line poem with a specific rhyme scheme.
What are the two types of sonnets?
1 Shakespearian- abab, cdcd, efef
2 Italian- the last two lines do not rhyme
What is a lyric?
A deeply personal poem about feelings (not sung)
What is a ballad?
A poem that is meant to be sung.
What is a Free verse?
A poem that has no rhyme, rhythm, or pattern. There is however a central focus to the poem.
What is a blank verse?
There is no rhyme, but there is a rhythm. This is always has the same number of beats per line.
What is an epic poem?
An extremely long poem about heroic adventure. It is written in rhyming couplets
What is an ode?
A formal poem written on praise of an object.
What is a metaphor?
A direct comparison of two unlike objects.
Ex) life is a highway
What is a simile?
An indirect comparison of two objects
Ex) my love is like a red, red rose
What is a hyperbole?
A deliberate exaggeration
Ex) she out ran the bullet
What is personification?
Giving inamorata objects human characteristics
Ex) my pen died
What is apostrophe?
An object or person who is not present is addressed as if it/he/she is present
Ex) oh shakespeare, lend me your wisdom now.
What is imagery?
The use of language to represent things, actions, or abstract ideas. This can be usual or auditory.
Ex) thy flowing hair softly lifted by the wind
What is irony?
The poet intends a meaning contradictory to the words
Ex) oh heavens , die two months ago and not forgotten yet? Then there is hope a great mans memory may covet his life a half year.
What is metonymy?
A name or idea is substituted for another effect
Ex) when I consider how my light is spent
Light is replacing life
The White House generally means USA
What is an synecdoche?
A part represents the whole idea or object.
Ex) he fell in love the moment her wrist strolled by
What is an alliteration?
The close repetition of consonant sounds at the start of the word
Ex) to sit in solemn silence
What is assonance?
The close repetition of vowel sounds. They do not have to e at the begging if the word.
Ex) I love my dove
What is an allusion?
A brief reference of well known people or objects
Ex) I feared to approach my Juliet
What is onomatopoeia?
Certain words imitate what they represent
Ex) bang! Thud.
What is a Paradox?
A statement which appear self-contradictory although it does contain a basis of truth
Ex) I fell in love and I have never felt more trapped
