POEMS Flashcards
If we must die - Claude makay
calls for oppressed people to resist their oppressors through violent and brave action, even if it means dying in the fight. The poem’s message is that resistance will ensure dignity and force oppressors to honor those who fight back, even in death. McKay wrote the poem in 1919 in response to the brutal anti-Black violence that took place in the United States during the Red Summer. The Red Summer was a period of time in 1919 when Black citizens faced racist violence after returning from World War I.
