Poem At 39 Flashcards
How I miss my father
Immediately sets the tone of nostaliga and sadness through use of a short sentence
So tired
Ambiguous word- could be referring to the fact that he was an old ill man, or to the fact that he was a single parent working more than one job
Writing deposit slips and checks I think of him
Shows he was working lots
Money was important to their family
‘Bits of paper’
A metaphor for money- gave him freedom of his poor life and poverty
How I miss my father rep
Repetition emphasises point and shows change in mood
Telling the truth did not always mean a beating
People used to hit their children
Easier to lie than to tell the truth
He cooked like a dancing person in a yoga meditation
Similie and oxymoron
Captures the essecnse of her father and describes a fond memory of him to contrast from the heavy, serious beginning
Now I look and cook just like him
Metaphor for the fact that she’s learnt from him and his ways
Seasonsing none of my life the same way twice
Metaphor
Always keeping her life interesting and fun like her father
Is honouring him by describing him admirably
He would have grown to admire the woman I’ve become
Still looking for acceptance
Relates to
Piano
Though many of my truths must have grieved him before the end
She told him the truth and he didn’t like it
He must have said
Uncertain placing a memory on there
Enjambament
Shows flow of thoughts and memories
