What is implicit egotism?
The idea that many biases are unconscious, and egotism is valuing the self, so there are several different things that reflect an attraction to the self
- People can gravitate towards careers that match their last names (weak connection)
- It’s a tiny invisible nudge; it shapes what some people do some of the time
What is the IKEA effect?
We tend to overvalue the things we have created ourselves
What do people use to signal competence and our identity?
We use things we make
How do you make the IKEA effect stronger?
by getting people to question their competence
How does the global terrorism base define terrorism?
a threat or use of violence having a political, social, religious, or economic motive being committed by a non-combatant
What does salience mean?
Certain details seem to pop out more
- Outgroups are examined a little more closely
- Muslims instead of men are questioned more about terrorism because men are in the majority
- The misdeeds of Muslims become salient to us
What are the 3 core information motivators?
- People want to make accurate, efficient decisions in the most rewarding way possible (we use COMPARISON)
- We want to behave in ways that gain the approval of others
- We want to make decisions and behave in ways that allow us to be seen in a positive light; to stand out from the crowd, yet affiliate us with a group
Why is the salesman approach only likely to work once?
The awareness of the individual that fooled them becomes more heightened
- Trying to persuade people using more and more tactics is bad because people notice and start to resist
- Be clear about how you looking to change the behaviours of others, but not change the fundamental beliefs, because people don’t go against those
What are the common ineffective tactics of persuasion?
- Imply an incentive (pay people then they’ll work harder)
- Try to inform people into change (But we live in the most information overloaded world So, humans use shortcuts)
How do we help exercise cognitive control over our biases instead of quickly and automatically?
We need more “in the moment” reminders, so we can reduce implicit bias
How can officers reduce their implicit bias?
- The uncertainty in certain situations can hinder the officer’s judgment
- More useful to build procedures that give officers more time to think about the situation
What shapes the mind of the community?
The thumbprint of the culture
- you cannot just focus on the individuals
What does reminding people of death do?
It can change the way people think
- With this, we tend to stick to our ingroup more
