PNS subdivisions Flashcards
The somatic nervous system is voluntary or involuntary?
The autonomic system is vol or invol?
The enteric system vol or invol?
Somatic: voluntary
Autonomic: involuntary
Enteric: involuntary
In the somatic nervous system, motor neurons conduct impulses from CNS to which type of muscles?
Skeletal only
What are the two subdivisions of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic and parasympathetic
In the sympathetic nervous system, responses will include:
Pupil dilation Increased HR BP Airway dilation Vasodilation of skeletal and cardiac mm Glucose release Vasoconstriction in kidney and digestive tract
Parasympathetic system is known as …
The body’s response to this is what?
Rest and digest.
Conserve and restore energy systems
Increased digestive and urinary functions
Replenish nutrients, repair injuries, return to homeostasis
What is autonomic tone?
Balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic activity
What part of the brain is autonomic tone regulated by?
Hypothalamus
Most organs have dual innervation for SyNS and PaNS however some structures receive only sympathetic innervation. They are:
Sweat glands, ar rector pills, kidneys, most BVs, adrenal medullae.
Do effects from SyNS or PaNS last longer and are more widespread
Sym
What is the enteric nervous system?
Sensory neurons that monitor chemical changes within the GI tract and the stretching of its walls
In the enteric nervous system, what do the motor neurons control?
The contraction of GI tract smooth muscle, and secretions of the GI organs (eg acid se regions by the stomach)
What are the three subdivisions of the PNS?
Somatic nervous system
Autonomic nervous system
Enteric nervous system
