Connective Tissue Of The CNS Flashcards
What are the three layers of the CT that encircle brain and SC?
1) dura mater - tough outer layer
2) arachnoid membrane - middle layer “spider”
3) pia mater - inner layer “soft”
Where do meninges cover up until?
Cover brain and SC up until point nerves exit SC
What is the space on top of dura mater called? What is it filled with?
Epidural space: adipose and CT filled space between dura mater and wall of vertebral canal
Note: no epidural space in brain
Where is the Subdural space? What is it filled with?
Space between dura mater and arachnoid membrane. Filled with interstitial fluid
Where is the subarachnoid space? What is it filled with?
Space between subarachnoid membrane and pia mater.
Filled with cerebral spinal fluid
List the order of mater and space in the spinal cord from superficial to deep
Epidural space Dura mater Subdural space Arachnoid membrane Subarachnoid space Pia mater
What are meninges?
3 protective layers of CT that encircle brain and SC
How many layers are there of connective tissue covering spinal nerves?
3: Endoneurium, perineurium, epineurium
What is Endoneurium?
Deepest layer on connective tissue covering spinal nerves. Covers the axon (whether myelinated or not)
What is the perineurium?
Middle layer of connective tissue covering spinal nerves. Covers fascicles (bundles of axons)
What is the epineurium?
Outermost layer of connective tissue covering spinal nerves.
Which layers of the CT covering spinal nerves are vascularised?
Perineurium and epineurium
