PNS pharmacology Flashcards
Which drugs affect cholinergic transmission?
Muscarinic agonists/antagonists
Ganglion stimulating and blocking drugs
Neuromuscular blocking drugs
Anticholinesterase
How do muscarinic agonists work? When might they be used?
Stimulate postganglionic muscarinic receptors
CV system - slow and decrease CO
Smooth muscle - contracts (mostly), some dilation via vasodilation
Exocrine glands
Eye
What are the adverse effects of muscarinic receptors?
GI cramping
Salivation
Bradycardia
How do muscarinic antagonists work?
Inhibit postganglionic muscarinic receptors
What effect do muscarinic antagonists have?
Increase heart rate
Decrease salivary, bronchial and gastric secretion
Bronchodilation
Decreased GI motility
What are the adverse effects of muscarinic antagonists?
Tachycardia
Dry mouth
Constipation
Ganglion stimulating and blocking drugs have systemic and complex effects. Why?
Affect both sympathetic and parasympathetic ganglia
Rarely used!
