- control of tissues other than the skeletal muscle
- ensures that heart keeps beating and lungs continue to inhale and exhale w/o conscious direction
- contains 3 subdivisions: sympathetic, parasympathetic, enteric

A
- prepares body for situations that require the expenditure of energy
- coordinates arousal

A
- directs the storage of energy
- associated with rest, repair and energy storage

Enteric Nervous System
A
- consists of nerve cells embedded in the lining of the gastrointestinal system
- communicates with endocrine system that releases a number of chemicals essential to digestion
- results in conscious perceptions such as gastrointestinal pains, hunger etc
