CNS - cerebellum + structures in the brainstem Flashcards
Identify and name the functions of each brain part in the brainstem
1
Q
Medulla Oblongata
3
A
- Crucial part of the brain.
- Carries out critical functions such as breathing, swallowing and heart rate which are involuntary.
- Damage to this part causes quick death
2
Q
Pons
5
A
- Above medulla
- connects structures involved with the management of sleep, arousal and facial expressions.
- serves as the bridge between higher and lower parts of the brain
- connects the cerebellum to the rest of brain
- Very necessary – brain cannot function without pons because without it no messages would be transmitted
3
Q
Midbrain
2
A
- sits above the pons
- contains a number of structures involved in sensory reflexes, movement and pain
4
Q
Reticular formation
2
A
- Runs the length of the brainstem’s core from the upper medulla into the midbrain
- participates in the control of mood, arousal and sleep
5
Q
Cerebellum
2
A
- structure attached to the brainstem
- Essential for maintaining balance and motor coordination (voluntary tasks)
