PNF Flashcards

1

What are proprioceptors?

A

found in muscle tendons and joints
relay messages to brain regarding muscle movement

Q

what are muscle spindles?

A

stretch receptor
proprioceptor that prevents muscle from overstretching
lie between skeletal muscle fibres

Q

what are golgi tendon organs?

A

found between muscle fibre and tendon
proprioceptor that detects tension and signals for muscle to relax

Q

How do muscle spindles control movement?

A

send excitory signals to CNS on how fast and far a muscle is being stretched
CNS sends impulse back to muscle telling to contract concentrically, triggering stretch reflex

Q

How do golgi tendon organs control movement?

A

when muscle contracted isometrically in PNF, golgi sense increase in tension and send inhibitory signals to brain, allowing antagonist muscle to relax and lengthen
this is autogenic inhibition

Q

Describe PNF with partner

A

partner performs 30 second passive stretch
followed by 10 second isometric contraction
partner repeats 30 second passive stretch
increases range of movement between two stretches
