Can be given IM,IV,POP
Remind pt to use lternative form of Birth control if they are on oral contraceptives
AS A NURSE YOU MUST OBSERVE A PT FOR 30 MINUTES. PAST INJECTION FOR ALLERGIC REACTION
Usually welled traveled to all areas of body
Adverse effects of penicillin
Rash
N/v/d
HA
Steven Johnson syndrom
C-diff report bloody watery diarrhea
Anaphylaxis ( can have an anaphylactic reaction no matter what time you take it which is why it is important to observe them for 30 minutes)
Cephalosporin
Cephalexin in, cefdinir, cefixme, omnicef, rocepphin
If a pt consumes alcohol can make them alcohol intolerant for up to 3 days past last dose
Things to consider cephalosporin
PPCN and cephalosporin are chemically similar cross sensitivity happens
If a pt has a minor reaction to pPCN it is probably ok to give cephalosporin if they had major reaction may need top reconsider using it
Where would you give a shot of cephalosporin/rocephin?
In a larger muscle like the leg
Quinolones
Black box warning- report tendon pain risk for rupture
Take on an empty stomach- drink plenty of water
Avoid sun exposure or artificial sun teach pt to cover poking up and use sunscreen
May be given PO, IV
Adverse effects
N/V/D
Dizziness- teach to to move and get up slowly
Insomnia
Prolong Qt interval
Liver failure
Renal failure
Report tendon pain asap
Cponstipation
Taste disturbance
Exporant
Cough suppressant
Guaifenesin, mucinex, robitussin chest congestion
Teach pt to take with a full glass of water
Avoid taking while taking moi’s inhibitors
Why take expectorant with a full glass of water?
Help loosen up congestion and lubricate throat
Antitussive
Cough suppressant
Dextromethorphan and codeine IE, triamininic dm, delsym, Elixsure cough, theraflu, robitussin dm, Vicks formula 44
Do not use more than 7 days without seeking medical treatment
Avoid taking maoi’s inhibitors or withink 14 days of taking
Adverse effects of antitussive?
Dizziness
Somnolence
Fatigue
What should you teach when it comes to a pt taking antitussives?
Teach pt avoid activities requiring mental alertness or coordination until side effect of medication are established
Antitussive promethazine with codeine
Life threatenipng respiratory depression
So keep an eye on respirations
Teach pt to move slowly and get up slowly until they known how they will react to the medication
Sudafed, pseudoephedrine
Can increase blood pressure
Take in the morning to prevent insomnia
Do not take more than 7 days
Can cause palpitations
Afrin nasal spray
Topical
2-3 days in each nostril BID daily up to 3 days
You must teach pt not to use longer due to rebound congestion
May effect pt BP
Pecan become addicted to it and may even over dose
