Pneumonia Flashcards
Foreign materials in bronchial tree (food, saliva, nasal secretions)
Incompetent swallowing mechanism
Generally, the right middle and lower lung lobes
CVA, MS, Alzheimer’s disease, intoxication, ALS, PD
Chest pain, short of breath, wheezing, blue discoloration of skin, coughing up green sputum/blood/foul odor, excess sweating
Aspiration
Bacteria enters lung with inhalation
Community or hospital acquired
Bacteria live in upper respiratory tract
Infants, adults >65, long term immunosuppressant drugs, COPD, smokers
Fever, rigors, cough, chest pain, short of breath, runny nose
Bacterial
Virus invades the cells lining the airways and alveoli
Virus reaches lung by traveling in droplets through mouth and nose with inhalation
Invade alveoli
More common in children; influenza
Fever, non-productive cough, runny nose, myalgia, headache
Viral
From bacterial microorganism called mycoplasma pneumonia
Spread through contact with droplets from nose and throat of someone who has it
Common in older children and adults <40 years old
Cough in violent spasms but very little mucus, fever, chills, sore throat, headache, tiredness, lingering weakness that may persist after other symptoms go away
Walking pneumonia
Generally, the right middle and lower lung lobes
