Q
  1. What was the Holy Spirit’s role in relation to Scripture?
A

a. Author: “for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (2 Pet. 1:21).
b. Illumination: 1 Cor 2:10-13 “For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.”

Q
  1. Can a Christian “lose” the Holy Spirit? Explain your answer and support your answer with Scripture.
A

a. “Those filled with the Spirit are not said to have more of Him, but rather He has more of them. Further, filling is determined by a walk of faith whereas baptism, sealing, and indwelling occur automatically at regeneration, i.e. at saving faith” (Trevor Craigen).
b. 2 Cor 1:22 - seal
c. John 14:16 - forever

Q
  1. What are the Spirit’s duties in relationship to the New Testament believer in the church? Use Scripture to support your answer.
A

a. Regeneration - Rom 8:2
b. Sealed – 2 Cor 1:21-22
c. Baptized into the body of Christ – 1 Cor 12:13
d. Indwelt – 1 Cor 3:16-17
e. Filled –
i. Special filling: Acts 9:17 (Paul’s filling) - This is “special empowerment for specific purposes, the duration of which is left undefined. Caution: direct application to the contemporary church probably to be studiously avoided” (Trevor Craigen).
ii. Fullness: Acts 13:52 (Normal fullness of Spirit) - This is “a disposition characterized by the Spirit’s control and not restricted to a special task. An emphasis on an abiding relationship with the Holy Spirit. Application: such fullness is to be the desire of the contemporary church” (Trevor Cragien).
