Project Management Office PMO
A group or department that defines, maintains and ensures project management standards across an organisation
Main responsibilities of a PMO
• Chasing outstanding tasks
• Arranging meetings and taking minutes
• Creating and sending out comms
• Generic admin tasks
Three types of PMOs
• Embedded
• Central
• Hub and Spoke
Embedded PMO
• Under control of the PM
• Dedicated only to the project
• May have to follow corporate rules but can tailor them to the needs of the project
• Can establish bespoke systems and processes
• Effective for large projects that need a lot of support and can justify the cost
Strengths of Embedded PMOs
• Dedicated resource which can offer full time support to the project
• Provides a tailored approach to fit the needs of the project
Central PMO
• Sits outside the team providing services to multiple projects
• Project reporting and control are consistent across all projects as similars systems/tools are used
• Generally processes are defined on there own through working
Strength of Central PMOs
• More cost effective for smaller projects
Hub and Spoke PMO
• There are satellite PMOs who are dedicated to a few projects usually in one department
• Central hub is the head of function
• Project reporting and control is done by the satellite PMOs
• Systems and processes are defined by the central hub
Strength of Hub and Spoke PMOs
• More complex but works well for larger organisations who need a consistent approach to projects
