WHY AVOID?
Difficult to palpate or penetrate
Impaired circulation
Susceptible to infection
Contain dyes
NOTE
Insert the needle in a spot that doesn’t contain dye
burns, scars, tattoos
Veins that are HARD, CORD LIKE, LACK RESILIENCY because they are occluded or obstruct

Is SWELLING caused by the abnormal ACCUMULATION OF FLUID in the tissues
Caused when fluid from IV INFILTRATES the surrounding tissues
REASONS WHY EDAMATOUS AREAS ARE AVOIDED
Yield inaccurate test results
Veins are harder to locate
Healing may be prolonged
edema
Is a swelling or mass of clotted blood
Caused by BLOOD LEAKING from a blood vessel during or after venipuncture
It is a LARGE BRUISE that spreads over the surrounding area
REASONS WHY BRUISED AREAS ARE AVOIDED
Painful
Contaminated with hemolyzed blood
Obstruction of blood flow
hematoma
Their veins are DEEP and DIFFICULT to find
Use a BLOOD PRESSURE CUFF as the tourniquet
obese patients
Refers to SURGICAL BREAST REMOVAL
Blood should never be drawn from an arm on the SAME SIDE without 1st consulting the patients physician
- STOPPAGE of normal lymph flow
- SWELLING because of impaired lymph flow
mastectomy
