PMI02-2001 Micro-organism, structure & function Flashcards
What does TSE stand for?
Transmissible spongey encephalopathies
What are TSEs?
Infective proteins as they affect the structure of other proteins
These proteins come together to form plaques or sponge-like lesions in the brain
How are TSEs transmitted?
Via prions- misfolded proteins that are expressed on neurones in the body and are associated with neurodegenerative disease
It a normal prion comes into contact with a misfolded one, it causes transmission of infection
Are bacteria, eukaryotes and viruses visible in light microscopes?
Bacteria= yes Eukaryotes= yes Viruses= no
Are bacteria, eukaryotes and viruses capable of free growth?
bacteria= some are eukaryotes= yes viruses= no
Can cell division of bacteria, eukaryotes and viruses make new cells
bacteria= yes eukaryotes= yes viruses= n/a
Are bacteria, eukaryotes and viruses metabolically active?
bacteria= yes eukaryotes= yes viruses= no
Are genes separated from the cytoplasm by membrane in bacteria, eukaryotes and viruses?
Bacteria= no eukaryotes= yes viruses= n/a
What is in genome in bacteria, eukaryotes and viruses?
bacteria= DNA eukaryotes= DNA viruses= DNA/RNA
Why are viruses referred to as obligate intracellular parasites?
They use a host cell’s machinery to reproduce
What is positive RNA?
Can be used directly for translation by acting as mRNA
What is negative RNA?
Needs to be transcribed first
What is the protein coat of a virus called and what is its purpose?
capsid
protects the nucleic acid
What are naked viruses?
They have the protein coat with the DNA inside
What are enveloped viruses?
They are packaged in a plasma membrane from the host cell
