Pmat Flashcards
What is the growing stage of a cell called
Interphase
What is the division stage of a cell called
Mitosis
What stage is most of the cells life spent in
Interphase
What is mitosis
The process of cell division to create genetically identical cells
Why do cells need to undergo mitosis
For growth, to repair or replace damaged cells, reproduction of an organism
What is interphase
The cell grows and carries out its normal functions, it make a copy of its organelles, makes a copy of its DNA to prepare for division
What is prophase
The nuclear membrane begins to disappear, the DNA condenses into chromosomes that are visible under the microscope (since it was duplicated in interphase, 2 identical copies are joined together)
What is metaphase
Spindle fibers in the cytoplasm attach to the duplicated chromosomes, chromosomes line up at the middle of the cell
What is anaphase
Duplicated chromosomes are pulled apart by the spindle, separating the identical copies of DNA, each part is not called a chromatid(or single chromosome)
What is telophase
Each nucleus now has a complete set of chromosomes, new nuclear membranes begin to form around the chromosomes, the chromosomes begin to uncoil
What is cytokinesis
Part of telophase, pinches and divides the cytoplasm into two parts, two identical cells are formed (if plant cell, cell plate is formed in between the two cells instead)
