Parts Of Cell/ Terms Flashcards
What is an organ system
A system of one or more organs and structures that work together to perform a major vital body function such as digestion or reproduction
What is tissue
A collection of similar cells that perform a particular, but limited function
What is an organelle
A cell structure that performs a specific function for the cell
What is a cell
The structural, functional and biological unit of all organisms
What are organs
A structure composed of different tissues working together to perform a complex body function
What is cell membrane
A membrane that controls which substances are able to enter and leave the cell
What is a nucleus
Controls all cell processes, contains dna which is the genetic information for the organism
Nucleolus
Makes ribosomes(another organelle)
What is a mitochondria
Provide energy for the cell by breaking down food, often called the “powerhouse” of the cell
What is a Golgi body
Involved in packaging substances for cell export
What is a vacuole
Stores food and water for the cell, small in animal cells, one large on in plant cells
What is Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
A series of tubes that transport substances (mainly proteins), may be smooth (no ribosomes on the outside) or rough (have ribosomes on outside)
Ribosomes
Receive instruction from the DNA on how to make specific proteins, may be attactched to the ER or floating in the cytoplasm
What is lysosome
Packages of enzymes used for breaking down different substances, this can include nutrients, old or damaged cell parts etc.
What is a cell wall
Made of cellulose, provides support and protection, is porus, only found in plant cells
