Pluralism and Theology Flashcards
EXCLUSIVISM
DEFINITION
- Belief that only Christianity offers means of salvation
- Jesus is ‘the way’ not ‘a way’
EXCLUSIVISM
CHRIST’S SACRIFICE
- Christ’s sacrifice unique
- Salvation only reach those who hear gospel and respond with faith e.g baptism
EXCLUSIVISM
NARROW EXCLUSIVISM
- salvation only possible for those of particular denomination
- Augustine and Calvin
- Believed God only elects-through grace-a small number of Christians for salvation
EXCLUSIVISM
CATHOLICS
-Catholics believed there is no salvation outside of the church (extra ecclesiam nulla salus)
-View has been considered less narrow since book Lumen Gentium
‘Many elements of sanctification and truth are found outside of its visible structure’
EXCLUSIVISM
BROAD EXCLUSIVISM
- salvation possible for all who accept Christ regardless of denomination
- Other religions may contain some truth, but not enough for salvation
- Gavin D’Costa asserted universal access exclusivism- salvation possible after death
EXCLUSIVISM
HENDRIK KRAEMER
Non-Christian world
- Christian message in a non-Christian world
- aimed to bring different denominations together
- Worked among missionaries in non-Christian countries spreading message that salvation could only be achieved through conversion
- We should evaluate other religions holistically
EXCLUSIVISM
KARL BARTH
Importance of Christ
- importance of Christ for salvation
- Humans can’t achieve on own
- God can only be known where he chooses to reveal his knowledge through word e.g. Christ
- Revelation always God’s choice
EXCLUSIVISM
CHANGE IN ATTITUDE FOR CATHOLICS?
- Despite previous associations, attitudes began to change after Vatican II
- Long series of meetings between 1962/5, where leading figures discussed Catholic Church into the modern world
- Results were more positive and open response to other denominations and other world faiths
INCLUSIVISM
INTRODUCTION
- Christianity if normative means of salvation but ‘anonymous Christians’ may also receive salvation
- Salvation reached by those who turn in afterlife and those who follow God in wrong context, truth should be from Christ even if without realisation
INCLUSIVISM
KARL RAHNER
Standard setting
- Christianity sets standard by which other religions should be measured
- omnibenevolent God should offer salvation to those who have not been able to freely accept Christ
- Christ holds truth but people can follow him unknowingly and still have relationship with God
BIBLE AS SOURCE OF AUTHORITY
JOB 19:25
Job appears to refer to Jesus ‘I know that my redeemer lives’
BIBLE AS SOURCE OF AUTHORITY
MATTHEW 25:33-40
The parable of the Sheep and the Goats implies anyone living by altruistic love is working for Christ whether they realise it or not ‘what you do for the least person, you do for me’
RAHNER’S REJECTION OF EXCLUSIVISM
Do not hear Christ
- Rejected idea as some through no fault of own never hear the words of Christ and therefore never receive salvation
- Does not seem in line with God’s omnibenevolent nature
INCLUSIVISM
HANS URS VIN BALTHASAR
- Critic of the ‘anonymous Christian’
- Multi-Culturalism should not be an excuse to ‘water down’ the importance of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection
PLURALISM
INTRODUCTION
- View that there are many ways to salvation
- Christianity is one of these
- Human culture causes differences in beliefs and practices, but religions share the same ultimate goal
