Plumbing Flashcards
What are dielectric fittings used for?
Connect two dissimilar metal pipes together.
What is a risk of a rusting galvanized pipe?
- Reduced water pressure and eventual leaks as rust creates holes in the pipe walls (will occur soonest on hot water pipes)
How does an air admittance valve function?
Negative pressure in pipe lifts washer and allows air intake.
What are 2 requirements for Air Admittance Valves.
- Must be accessible
- Must be at least 6” above insulation in attics
What type of trap can lead to siphoning?
S Traps.
What be be installed to prevent siphoning in S trap fixtures?
Air Admittance Valve.
What is a trap primer?
- Typically a plastic tube attached to a fixture (laundry tub)
- When used, some water is sent to a basement floor drain
- Keeps floor drain from drying out
What slope is required for horizontal drain pipes?
Downward slope of 1/4” per foot maximum.
What distance should a plumbing vent extend above the roof?
6 inch minimum, 12 inch maximum. (prevents frost closure)
What are the 3 layers in a septic tank?
1) Scum
2) Effluent
3) Sludge
What are the 3 main components of a septic system?
1) Septic tank
2) Tile bed
3) Bacteria
Where are cross connections found?
Where a faucet is below the high water level.
What can be used to prevent contaminated water from being siphoned back into potable water supply? (cross connections)
Dishwasher: Air gap or high rise loop
Laundry tub: Air gap (replaced faucet)
Bathtub: Air gap (replaced fixture)
Bidet: Vacuum breaker
What is used to determine the pumping capacity of a well?
Draw-Down test.
What is a result of “waterlogged” well pressure tank?
Well pump will cycle on more frequently.
