What is the most common problem with ceramic floor tiles?
Cracking due to subflooring which is not stiff enough.
When does stairway lighting requires switchse at both the top and bottom of the stairs?
- When stairs have more than 3 treads/risers (CA)
- When stairs have more than 6 treads/risers (US)
What are the 3 layers referred to in a plaster/wood lath wall?
Layer 1: Scratch coat
Layer 2: Brown coat

What could be a cause of squeaky flooring?
Subflooring not adequately secured to joists.
What are some interior structural clues?
- Cracks on interior finishes shown outside
- Walls out of plumb
- Wall movement (corners) of more than 1/4”
- Gaps between walls and ceilings
- Cracked and/or sagging partition walls
What are the purposes of a window?
1) Light
2) Ventilation
3) Emergency exit
How is Tempered Safety Glass made?
By heating it and rapidly cooling it. (stronger than regular glass)
- Check for etching on glass where safety glass is required.
When is Temperered Safety Glass required?
1) Top >36” above walking surface
2) Opening >9 sq.ft. opening
3) Bottom <18” above ground
4) Walking surface <36” in front
Sidelites within 24” of entry door, <60” high.
Windows in doors >3” high.
