Archetype
eference to concept, person, or object that has served as a prototype of its kind and has come to be used over and over again
Ex: the hero, the damsel, the villain
Stock character
character type that appears repeatedly in particular literary genre, one which has certain conventional attributes or attitudes
Superego
part of person’s mind that acts as self-critical conscience, reflecting social standards learned from parents and teachers
Catharsis
cleansing of emotions for characters; renewal, emotional discharge
Epiphany
that moment in the story where a character achieves realization, awareness, or feeling of knowledge, after which events are seen through prism of this new light in the story
Exposition
literary device used to introduce characters, background, setting
Anticlimax
disappointing situation or sudden transition in discourse from important idea to trivial one
Catastrophe
the “turning downward” of a plot in a traditional tragedy
Denouement
ending of book
Limited Omniscient POV
narrator who does not share all information about characters’ thoughts and actions
Omniscient POV
“all knowing”; narrator knows and shares about all characters’ thoughts and actions
Pathetic fallacy
attribution of human feelings and responses to inanimate things or animals
