Pleural Dz Flashcards
Peripneumonic pleural effusion- definition
fluid in the pleural space
Peripneumonic pleural effusion- causes, fluid type, uni or bilateral
Non infectious causes= cirrhosis, CHF, nephrotic syndrome –> transudate
Infectious- empyema–> exudate, unilateral if infection
Cancer- hemorrhagic, bilateral
Peripneumonic pleural effusion- complications
atelactasis and restriction of lung movement leading to SOB
Peripneumonic pleural effusion- CXR
blunted costrophrenic edges
Peripneumonic pleural effusion- dx
Dx- tap fluid and send for labs
Pneumothorax-
air trapped int he pleural cavity leading to collapse of the lung
Pneumothorax- cause
trauma or can be spontaneous
Pneumothorax- types
Spontaneous- trachea deviates to the same side as the collapsed lung
Tension (air is trapped in the pleural space so that crushes the lung)- trachea deviates to the opposite side as the collapsed lung
