How is the thoracic cavity divided?
Left and right pleural cavities and the mediastinum
What are the 2 layers of pleura and what do they cover?
Parietal (covers the cavities)
Visceral (covers the lungs)
What is the function of pleural fluid?
Lubricating function
Allows the lungs to move independently of other organs
What is fissure is seen on both lungs?
Oblique fissure
Does the left or right lung have an extra fissure - what is the name of the fissure?
Right lung
Horizontal fissure
What are bronchopulmonary segments?
Further segments of the lungs that are supplied by different arteries
What is the hilum of the lung?
Hole in the medial aspect of each lung, where the lung root is found
What is the long root?
Bronchus, pulmonary arteries and veins, bronchial arteries and veins, pulmonary plexus or nerves
Where is the apex of the lung located?
2cm above the clavicle
What is the purpose of the costodiaphragmatic recess?
Allows the lung to expand during inspiration
Why is the left lung smaller than the right lung?
Allows room for the heart
