Pleur-evac Flashcards

Q
Draw and describe the Pleur-evac system used for continuous suction
A
The first bucket is for collection of fluid. Air continues onto the middle bucket. The second bucket serves as a safety valve and is known as the “water seal”. Any air drawn from the patient accumulates in the water but the valve ensures that air cannot go back into the patient even if the suction stops. The third bucket is where you fill water to draw a certain amount of suction pressure (<20 cm H2O). The atmospheric is another safety feature that pulls air from the atmosphere if the suction tries to start pulling too much from the patient.
