  1. Surplus energy: youth depend on caregivers so do not have to expend energy on these functions there is thus excess energy that needs to be expelled
  2. Recreation: fatigue builds up due to all the unfamiliar tasks in childless need to restore spent energy
  3. Pre-exercise: preparations for serious use in future
  4. Recapitulation: play is product of evolutionary biological processes
