- Socrates was an influential philosopher who inspired the young Plato and became his teacher
- Socrates was condemned to death, accused of treason for corrupting the minds of young Athenian men and for impiety (rejection of the gods)
- At his trial, Socrates said, ‘the unexamined life is not worth living’
- Socrates accepted death nobly and inspired Plato to pursue philosophy
- Socrates died in 399 BCE

A
- Plato worked as a soldier and fought in three campaigns
- He lived in Syracuse, Sicily.
- He worked as a tutor to King Dionysius I’s son – but this was not a success
- He returned to Athens to set up the Academy (a school/university).
