Plato Flashcards

Q
No scientific evidence
A
- It lacks empirical evidence.
- However, Plato would respond by saying that it is good his theory has no evidence because evidence can not be trusted as it is only a shadow of the real world of the Forms.
- This is a weak argument because it is wrong to reject evidence, science can prove that empiricism can succeed.

Q
We can recognise things before we’re born
A
- Plato says that as we have concepts of things such as beauty and justice before we were born there must be a world of Forms.
- However, Wittgenstein criticises this and says that there are no precisely definable form or abstract ideal of a category. He uses the example of a family picture, there are similarities but there isn’t a perfect form of that family.
