Plate Tectonics - CaseStudy Flashcards
Mt Pinatubo
Evaluate the effectiveness of the preparation and response management of volcanic activity
General Information
Mt Pinatubo in the Philippines erupted on the 15th June 1991 after lying dormant for over 500 years.
The Start
Preparation for this volcanic eruption first began after 2nd April 1991 when steam emissions from the side of the volcano signalled the first signs of activity from the volcano.
Preparation
~Monitoring~
In response to this, the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) arrived on the site and began monitoring the volcano and a 10km radius danger zone was declared around the volcano.
~Monitoring Equipment~
The United States Geologic Survey (USGS) team also arrived with seismometers, tiltmeters and other equipment to monitor any volcanic activity which included warning signs such as 10-150 earthquakes per day and increasing gas emissions with sulphur dioxide levels rising from 500 tonnes per day to 5000 tonnes per day in a period of 5 weeks.
