The number of people being affected by tectonic disasters is increasing due to more people living in more densely urbanised areas; however technological advancements have allowed humans to monitor disasters, develop building codes and warning systems.

However economic cost has risen with the average cost of a natural disaster being ~$100 billion a year

• Caused ash outpouring in the stratosphere, affected 20 European countries with countless airline companies closing down
• Impact was felt as far as Kenya, food imports stopped for a day (loss of ~$3 million)
• Total economic damage of ~£3 Billion and 100,000 flights cancellations
