Plate Tectonics Flashcards
Convergent
Colliding tectonic plates
They create mountains & trenches
Plate tectonic theory
The earths lithosphere is broken up into sections or pieces called plates-also called lithosphere plates or tectonic plates. The movement produces major changes in atmosphere
Transform
Collide by sliding past each other.
They create earthquakes and faults
Divergent
Seperate from each other.
Creates ridges & , volcanoes
Convection cells
When the mantle rocks rise towards the crust, they cool off and become denser than the rocks below. Therefore they sink towards earths hot center and the cycle of convection continues
Convection cells
A convection cell is a system in which a fluid is warmed, loses density and is forced into a region of greater density
Volcanoes
Volcanoes can occur along both convergent and divergent plate boundaries. Along convergent ones, they occur as the two plates collide together and one subducts under the other. They can also happen along divergent plate boundaries
Hotspots
An area of intense heat, radiation, or activity
Volcanoes are on hotspots
