plate tectonics Flashcards
name the 9 major world plates
Pacific plate, North American plate, South American plate, Nazca plate, Eurasian plate, African plate, Indian plate, Indo- Australian plate, Antarctic plate
if two plates are sliding past each other, what’s it called
transform plate boundary (earthquakes, fault line)
If tow plates go away from each others what’s it called
A constructive plate boundary (volcanoes, mid ocean ridge)
what’s it called when two plates go into each other
a destructive plate boundary (volcanoes, earthquakes, fold mountains)
What happens when an oceanic crust collides with a continental crust?
The oceanic crust is dragged down into the mantle where it’s recycled into mantle. It’s called subduction. And deep trenches form in the seabed when a subduction happens e.g. Marianas Trench.
what happens when two continental crusts collide?
The crusts crumple upwards making fold mountains e.g the Himalayas
What happens when a transform plate boundary happens?
It causes a line on the earths surface called a fault line, e.g the San Andreas fault line in California
What happens when plates get stuck while a transform plate boundary’s happening?
They build up great pressure until they slip, releasing the pressure. It causes a very bad earthquake, e.g the 1994 Northridge earthquake along the San Andreas fault line.
