Plate Tectonics Flashcards
What makes the plates move
What makes the plates moves are the convection current, Convection currents are identified in Earth’s mantle. Heated mantle material is shown rising from deep inside the mantle, while cooler mantle material sinks, creating a convection current
3 types of boundaries
Divergent boundary: A divergent boundary occurs where two tectonic plates move away from each other. As the plates move apart, magma rises from the mantle to fill the gap between them, creating new crustal material. Divergent boundaries are typically found along mid-ocean ridges
Convergent boundary: A convergent boundary occurs where two tectonic plates move towards each other.
Transform boundaries: A plate boundary where two plates move past each other in opposite direction. Transform boundary may cause earthquakes
Subduction zone and three types of conergence
Oceanic-continental: When a ocean plate colides witha continental plate. As the ocean plate is desner than the continental palte, the ocean plate subducts and the continental plates builds up causing ti to uplift. Occurs when an oceanic plate is subducted beneath a continental plate. This process can result in the formation of a volcanic arc on the continent and can cause earthquakes. An example of this type of boundary is the Andes Mountains in South America.
Subdcution zone: The process by which oceanic crust sinks beneath a deep ocean trench and back into the mantle at a convergent plate boundary
Oceanic-oceanic convergence: Ocean plate collidnig with another ocean plate. The one that is more dense will subduct, while the less dense one will go up beneath the one that is less dense The less dense plates slides under the more dense plate creating a subduction zone called a trench when two oceanic plates collide and one is subducted beneath the other. This can result in the formation of volcanic islands or island arcs, such as Japan or the Aleutian Islands.
Continental-continental convergence: Occurs when two continental plates collide. This can result in the formation of mountain ranges, such as the Himalayas.
The subduction zone is called a
The subduction zone is called a TRENCH
What type of landforms are formed at the 3 different boundries:
Convergent:
Volcanic arcs: These are chains of volcanoes that form parallel to the boundary, on the overriding continental plate. The volcanoes are fueled by magma generated by the subducting oceanic plate as it sinks into the mantle.
Trenches: These are long, narrow, and deep depressions in the ocean floor that form parallel to the boundary, where the subducting oceanic plate sinks beneath the overriding continental plate.
Divergent:
Mid-ocean ridges: These are long, underwater mountain ranges that form at divergent boundaries in the oceanic crust.
Rift valleys: These are large, linear valleys that form at divergent boundaries in continental crust. Examples include the East African Rift Valley and the Rio Grande Rift in North America.
Transofrm boundary:
