Plate Boundries and topographic maps Flashcards
What is subduction
It’s when crust is being destroyed and trenches are being formed
What is Seafloor spreading
It’s the process by which new oceanic crust is forms along the mid ocean ridge and older oceanic crust moves away from the ridge
What is shearing
Shearing is the process when two plates go against each other and trenches and valleys are formed
What is Convection
The process of hot material from the deep in the earth while the cooler material near the surface sinks
Three types of plate boundaries
Convergent
Divergent
Transform boundaries
What landforms are in a divergent boundary
Rift zone , fault-block, volcanic mountains
List the land forms In a Convergent boundary
Subduction volcanic mountains deep trenches
What type of land forms are involved in the transform boundary
Faults, earthquakes
What is a contour line
A line on a map that connects points Equal elevation
What is a contour interval
A difference in elevation and it must be equal spacing
What is an index contour
Usually every 5th line is printed darker and has elevation printed on it
What are the rules for contours?
- Contour lines should never cross
2. Contours form closed loops (even if not shown of the map)
How can you determine if a slope is steep
Steeper slope - contour lines are closer together
Gradual/gentle slope - contour lines are farther apart
