Plate boundaries and the distribution of tectonic hazards Flashcards

1
Q

Convergent/Destructive Plate Boundaries

A

2 plates move together and form either a subduction zone or continental collision.
Causes earthquakes and volcanoes.
Continental+oceanic = subduction zone= surface volcanism usually
2 continental = mountain ranges.
Most explosive type of boundary.

Q

Transform/conservative

A

Plates slide against each other horizontally. Cause extensive shallow focus earthquakes of high magnitude

Q

Divergent/constructive

A

Plates move away from each other.
Magma can rise to fill the gap causing volcanoes to form.
Creates shield volcanoes at mid ocean ridges.
Mid Atlantic ridge has basaltic lava which has low viscosity.

Oceanic Crust

A

thin
under the sea
denser
mainly made of basalt

Q

continental crust

A

thick
land
less dense
mainly made of granite
floats as it has a lower density that the higher density mantle below

Q

Hotspot Volcanoes

A

found in the middle of tectonic plates (intra-plate volcanism). Heating from a mantle plume causes melting and thinning of the crust, which leads to volcanic activity on the surface.
