Plate boundaries Flashcards
Whats a hazard
Something with the potential to cause harm to people and their settlements
What’s a risk
The probability or chance that people will be seriously affected by natural hazards
What’s a disaster
When a hazard causes large destruction to people and the environment
Name the 11 layers of Earth
Asthenosphere, Continental Crust, Core, Crust, Inner Core, Lithosphere, Mantle, Mesosphere, Oceanic Crust, Outer Core
What are Convection Currents
When radioactive waste and magma coming up from the Earth’s core rises up and cools down eventually moving the plates apart
Plate margin/boundary
The margin where 2 plates are met
Asthenosphere
The partially melted crust on top of the mantle
Lithosphere
The layer of crust on top of the Asthenosphere
Tectonic Hazard
A Tectonic Plate that has the potential to cause harm
Name the four plate margins
Constructive Margin, Destructive Margin, Conservative Margin, Collision Margin
Describe the movement of the Conservative Margin
The two plates move parallel to each other
Describe the movement of the Constructive Margin
The two plates move away from each other
Describe the movement of the Destructive Margin
The two plates move towards each other but the plates slide under each other (subduction)
Describe the movement of the Collision Margin
The two plates move toward each other
Name the 9 Plates
Pacific Plate, North American Plate, Nazca Plate, South American Plate, African Plate, Antarctic Plate, Eurasian Plate, Indian Plate, Australian Plate
